The arrest was executed by officers from the Narcotics Control Unit of Sri Lanka Customs at the airport in Katunayake on October 28. The suspect, a professional engineer, was intercepted during routine screening procedures as he arrived at the facility.
During the search, customs officials recovered packages containing both cocaine and ecstasy pills concealed among the detainee's belongings. The estimated street value of the seized narcotics stands at Rs. 454 million, marking a significant haul in the country's ongoing efforts against drug trafficking.
The apprehension highlights continued vigilance at Sri Lanka's primary international air gateway, where customs authorities maintain regular screening operations. The case has been forwarded to relevant law enforcement agencies for further investigation and prosecution proceedings.
The arrest comes as Sri Lankan authorities intensify efforts to counter the transnational drug trade, with numerous seizures recorded at ports and airports in recent months. The Narcotics Control Unit has expanded its operations to target smuggling networks operating through the country's border checkpoints.
