Indian equities open lower as F&O expiry, earnings season weigh

Domestic equity benchmarks opened on a subdued note, with the BSE's 30-share Sensex index slipping 122 points in early trading. The broader Nifty 50 benchmark remained rangebound around the 22,700 level as traders navigated the final trading day of monthly derivatives expiries alongside a busy season of quarterly earnings announcements.

Sector performance remained mixed across the market. Information technology, fast-moving consumer goods, oil and gas, and private banking indices traded in negative territory. Conversely, automotive, pharmaceutical, public sector banking and real estate stocks posted gains, with defensive sectors providing some support to the overall market sentiment.

The expiry of monthly futures and options contracts typically triggers elevated trading volumes and volatility as investors square off positions ahead of the deadline. This, combined with the ongoing cascade of second-quarter financial results from major corporations, has kept market participants cautious about taking large directional positions.

Analysts suggested that movement in key banking and IT stocks would remain critical in determining the overall direction of the indices through the remainder of the session, with market participants closely watching earnings releases and commentary from corporate management for guidance on economic conditions and demand outlook.
