Indian equities retreat as oil prices remain elevated, tech stocks slide
Benchmark indices reversed gains in early trading Wednesday as persistent crude oil prices weighed on sentiment. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty both declined in opening deals, with information technology stocks coming under pressure.

India's stock markets fell in early trade, with both key indices sliding as elevated crude oil prices and selling in the technology sector dampened investor confidence. The 30-share BSE Sensex declined 281.95 points to settle at 73,316.21, while the broader 50-share NSE Nifty dropped 63.15 points to 22,694.60 in morning dealings.
The decline reflects ongoing concerns about global crude prices, which continue to remain at elevated levels. Higher oil prices typically weigh on Indian equities given the country's dependence on imported petroleum, raising concerns about inflation and fiscal pressures.
Adding to the selling pressure, the information technology sector faced headwinds with major IT stocks recording losses. The sector's weakness has contributed significantly to the overall market decline, mirroring broader concerns about global technology valuations and demand.
Analysts noted that the combination of external factors—including crude price persistence and sectoral weakness—has prompted cautious positioning among market participants. The early decline suggests investors are adopting a wait-and-watch approach amid the current macroeconomic environment.
