Indian equities retreat as Sensex, Nifty extend losses mid-session

Indian equity markets surrendered morning advances as a broad-based selloff pulled major indices lower during mid-session trading. The BSE Sensex declined by over 700 points from previous close, while the NSE Nifty50 hovered near the 22,400 mark, signalling a shift in investor sentiment after an initially positive start to the day's session.

Beyond the headline indices, weakness was more pronounced in broader market segments. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks bore the brunt of selling, with both categories posting steeper declines than their large-cap counterparts. The outperformance of downside pressure in these segments suggested retail and institutional investors were reassessing their risk appetite.

Market volatility indicators reflected heightened investor anxiety. The India VIX, the market's fear gauge measuring expected 30-day volatility, surged above the 6 per cent level, underscoring the shift toward defensive positioning. The uptick in volatility accompanied the broader equity selloff, with traders citing profit-taking and reduced appetite for risk as key drivers of the mid-session retreat.

The reversal of early gains highlighted the market's susceptibility to sentiment swings and suggested investors were taking a cautious stance ahead of key economic data and corporate announcements. Market participants remained watchful of both domestic economic indicators and global developments that could influence subsequent trading direction.
