The Nifty 50 and Sensex indices opened in negative territory on Tuesday, extending a five-day downturn that has weighed on investor sentiment across India's stock markets. The persistent weakness reflected broad-based selling across the market, with the majority of stocks traded on the National Stock Exchange moving lower during the session.
Market breadth deteriorated significantly, with approximately 1,688 NSE stocks declining against gains in a smaller number of issues. This imbalance underscored the challenging environment for equity investors, as selling pressure was concentrated across multiple sectors rather than isolated to specific pockets of the market.
Information technology stocks emerged as one of the worst performing sectors, reflecting concerns that have periodically affected the technology-heavy segment. Public sector banking stocks also came under considerable pressure, adding to the headwinds facing the broader market.
The consecutive days of losses have raised concerns among market participants about the sustainability of recent gains and the impact of macroeconomic factors on corporate earnings. Analysts will be monitoring whether the decline stabilizes or deepens in coming sessions, with attention focused on domestic economic data and global market trends.
