India's primary stock market indices retreated on Tuesday, with the Sensex dropping more than 500 points while the Nifty 50 fell below the 22,500 mark, reflecting investor caution across most segments of the market.
Sectoral performance was mixed, with the Information Technology index bucking the downward trend and trading in positive territory. However, weakness prevailed in other key segments, including metals, realty, automobiles, fast-moving consumer goods, oil and gas, and media stocks, which recorded the sharpest declines among major sectoral gauges.
The broader selloff indicated risk aversion among market participants, with defensive sectors failing to provide support amid the losses across cyclical and commodity-linked stocks. The underperformance of metal and realty indices suggested concerns about economic momentum, while energy and consumer discretionary stocks also faced headwinds.
Market analysts attributed the downturn to a combination of factors including profit-taking and concerns over macroeconomic conditions. The Nifty IT's resilience offered limited relief, as the retreat in banking, financial services, and infrastructure-linked sectors compounded the overall market weakness.
