Indian investors pour record sums into overseas equities and bonds
Indian mutual fund investors have deployed unprecedented amounts into foreign securities and debt instruments, with fund-of-funds routes holding substantial assets as of late July. The surge reflects growing appetite among domestic investors to diversify portfolios internationally.

Indian investors channeled record capital into overseas stocks and debt securities during June, marking a significant shift in investment patterns as domestic savers seek international exposure. The momentum has sustained into the subsequent month, with mutual funds offering overseas investment avenues accumulating considerable assets.
Fund-of-funds schemes, which provide an indirect route for Indian investors to access international markets, held assets valued at 465.5 billion rupees ($4.9 billion) as of July 31. These vehicles have become increasingly popular among retail investors looking to manage currency risks and gain exposure to global equity and fixed-income markets without directly navigating foreign securities regulations.
The record investment flows underscore a broader trend of Indian investors expanding beyond domestic markets. With equity valuations in India having appreciated significantly and domestic interest rates influencing returns on fixed-income securities, international diversification has emerged as an attractive strategy for wealth accumulation.
Mutual fund houses have responded to this demand by expanding their international investment offerings, making it easier for retail investors to participate in global markets. The regulatory framework governing overseas investments by Indian mutual funds has also become more streamlined, facilitating higher capital flows across borders.
Analysts attribute the surge partly to increased financial literacy among Indian investors and greater comfort with cross-border investments. As global markets recover from earlier uncertainties, investor confidence in overseas securities has strengthened, making international exposure a standard component of balanced portfolio strategies.
