Indian marketers embrace sports sponsorship to reach new audiences

Indian marketers are leading global peers in recognizing sports sponsorship as a strategic tool for audience development, according to findings from a Nielsen study covering six major markets. The survey shows that 61 per cent of Indian marketing professionals view sports sponsorships primarily as an opportunity to test engagement with new audiences—a proportion significantly higher than marketers in the United States and Germany.

The research underscores India's distinctive approach to sports marketing investment. Beyond audience testing, the survey found that 42 per cent of Indian marketers measure the effectiveness of sports sponsorships across both traditional and digital media channels, reflecting a sophisticated approach to campaign evaluation in an increasingly multi-platform media landscape.

The findings highlight how Indian companies are leveraging the country's passion for sports to expand market reach while simultaneously building more robust measurement frameworks. As digital adoption accelerates across India, marketers are increasingly integrating cross-channel analytics to assess sponsorship returns, moving beyond conventional metrics to capture a more comprehensive picture of campaign impact.

The Nielsen data suggests that Indian marketers recognize sports properties as valuable testing grounds amid intense competition and diverse consumer preferences. This strategic positioning allows brands to validate new marketing approaches and audience segments before committing larger budgets, while the emphasis on multi-channel measurement reflects growing sophistication in performance tracking within the Indian marketing ecosystem.
