Indian markets face worst year in 15 years amid economic headwinds

India's stock market benchmarks, the Sensex and Nifty, are set to record their worst annual performance in approximately 15 years, signalling a challenging investment climate that shows little sign of immediate improvement. The twin headwinds of elevated global crude oil prices and rising domestic bond yields have weighed heavily on investor sentiment throughout the fiscal year ending March 2025.

Market strategists caution that the coming fiscal year could prove equally demanding unless these structural challenges ease. Crude oil prices remain elevated due to geopolitical tensions and supply concerns, while bond yields have climbed as central banks grapple with inflation management across the region. Both factors have compressed corporate profit margins and dampened equity valuations.

The weakness in Indian equities reflects broader concerns about economic growth sustainability. Foreign institutional investors have turned net sellers in recent months, redirecting capital to alternative markets offering better risk-reward prospects. Domestic institutional buying has provided only limited support.

Analysts emphasise that a sustained market recovery depends critically on moderating energy prices and stabilising interest rate expectations. Any easing in global crude costs and a moderation in domestic inflation could provide the necessary catalyst for a renewed rally. Until such relief materialises, market participants are likely to remain cautious in their positioning and selective in stock selection.
