Indian equity markets came under pressure on Monday amid growing concerns over geopolitical risks and rising energy costs. The BSE Sensex declined more than 800 points during intraday trade, while the NSE Nifty slipped below 23,800, reflecting broader risk-aversion across the market.
The selloff was primarily triggered by escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, which pushed crude oil prices sharply higher overnight. Brent crude surged approximately 5 per cent to reach $96 per barrel, marking a significant spike that has immediate implications for India's import-dependent economy.
Market analysts attributed the decline to concerns over inflationary pressures stemming from elevated oil prices. Higher crude costs typically feed into India's inflation metrics and can strain the country's current account deficit, both factors that weigh negatively on equities.
Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at a major investment firm, noted that the geopolitical escalation represents a fresh headwind for markets already grappling with various macro uncertainties. Energy price volatility remains a key risk factor that investors are closely monitoring as the situation develops.
