Indian medtech sector endorses single-use device reuse ban
The domestic medical technology industry has thrown its weight behind the Directorate General of Health Services' prohibition on reusing single-use medical devices, citing patient safety concerns. Industry bodies are now pushing for stronger enforcement mechanisms and accountability frameworks.

India's medical technology sector has expressed strong support for the DGHS directive prohibiting the reuse of single-use medical devices, viewing the measure as essential for safeguarding patient safety across healthcare facilities nationwide.
The All India Medical Device Manufacturers Association (AIMED) has reinforced the industry's backing for the ban while outlining key requirements needed for effective implementation. The association has called for rigorous inspection protocols at hospitals and diagnostic centers to ensure compliance with the prohibition, alongside robust mechanisms for tracking the disposal of used devices.
Clear liability frameworks have emerged as another critical priority for the sector. AIMED has emphasized that establishing unambiguous accountability structures will protect both patients and healthcare providers while creating a level playing field for legitimate device manufacturers competing against illicit reprocessing operations.
The reuse of single-use devices—originally designed and validated for a single application—has long raised concerns among medical professionals and regulators. Such devices may lose structural integrity, sterility, or functional efficacy after initial use, potentially compromising patient outcomes. The DGHS action marks a significant step toward standardizing safety practices across India's healthcare system.
Industry stakeholders believe that comprehensive enforcement, coupled with transparent disposal documentation and defined responsibility mechanisms, will strengthen regulatory oversight while reinforcing public confidence in the safety standards maintained within Indian healthcare facilities.
