Indian Navy begins flight trials of Rafale Marine fighter jets in Goa

The Indian Navy has initiated flight trials of the Rafale Marine fighter jet at its base in Goa, marking a significant milestone in the aircraft's integration with the service's carrier operations. The trials are being conducted ahead of the jets' planned deployment on board INS Vikrant, India's first indigenous aircraft carrier.

The Rafale Marine, a naval variant of the Rafale combat aircraft, has been specifically configured for carrier-based operations with reinforced landing gear and other modifications suited for deck landings. The testing phase is critical for validating the aircraft's performance in Indian operational conditions and ensuring compatibility with the carrier's systems.

India concluded a contract for 26 Rafale Marine aircraft in 2025, representing a substantial addition to the Navy's air combat capability. The procurement is expected to bolster India's maritime defence posture in the Indian Ocean region. Deliveries of the aircraft are scheduled to commence in 2028-29, with the induction process spanning several years.

The Rafale Marine acquisition forms part of India's broader modernisation programme for its naval aviation arm. The aircraft will complement existing carrier-based platforms and provide enhanced surveillance, strike, and air defence capabilities from the deck of INS Vikrant and future carrier platforms.
