Pradip Mukherjee, a sailor with the Indian Navy, was taken into custody by the Andhra Pradesh Police's Counter Intelligence Cell on October 3 from INS Arjun, a naval installation located in Coimbatore. The arrest followed allegations that Mukherjee had disclosed sensitive defense information to representatives of Pakistan's intelligence apparatus.
According to preliminary reports, the sailor had been targeted through what investigative agencies describe as a honeytrap operation, a common espionage technique involving romantic or social manipulation to extract classified material. The Counter Intelligence Cell launched the operation after gathering evidence of unauthorized information transfers.
The incident underscores ongoing security concerns within India's armed forces regarding the vulnerability of military personnel to foreign intelligence recruitment efforts. Officials have not released further details regarding the nature of the classified information allegedly compromised or the timeline of the suspected intelligence transfers.
The arrest comes as India and Pakistan continue to maintain heightened military vigilance along their shared border. Naval security protocols have been a particular focus of defense establishment scrutiny in recent years, with multiple incidents of espionage involving military and civilian defense sector employees.
