Indian Navy Training Squadron Arrives in Colombo for Goodwill Visit

The Indian Navy's First Training Squadron (1TS) will dock in Colombo from 26-28 October 2026, marking a significant addition to maritime cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. The deployment comprises Indian Naval Ships Tir and Sujata, alongside Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi, all engaged in a long-range training exercise spanning multiple ports across South and Southeast Asia.

The visit forms part of a broader regional itinerary that includes scheduled calls at Port Victoria in Seychelles and Male in the Maldives before the vessels return to their home base. Such training deployments are routinely undertaken by naval forces to enhance operational capabilities, foster international maritime relations, and demonstrate naval presence across strategic sea lanes.

The three-day port call in Colombo will facilitate interactions between Indian and Sri Lankan naval personnel, allowing for exchange of professional experiences and strengthening of bilateral maritime ties. Port visits of this nature typically include formal receptions, officer meetings, and opportunities for crew familiarisation with host port facilities.

The deployment underscores ongoing defence cooperation between the two neighbouring nations and reflects India's commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean region. The presence of a dedicated coast guard vessel alongside naval ships indicates the multi-dimensional nature of maritime operations undertaken during such training missions.
