Indian Oil Q2 profit surges on government LPG subsidy payout

Indian Oil Corporation reported a sharp jump in quarterly earnings for the April-June period, with net profit climbing to ₹21,630 crore compared to the prior-year quarter. The substantial improvement was largely driven by ₹7,243 crore in government compensation related to losses incurred on LPG distribution operations.

The payout reflects New Delhi's continued commitment to subsidizing cooking gas prices for domestic consumers. Indian Oil, as one of the country's primary LPG distributors, absorbs significant costs when crude-linked international prices diverge from government-set domestic rates.

However, the company's operational environment remained challenging during the quarter. Elevated global crude prices pushed up the firm's raw material costs, pressuring margins on petroleum refining and marketing operations. Despite these headwinds, the combination of improved pricing realizations and government support resulted in the pronounced profit growth.

The results reflect broader dynamics in India's energy sector, where state intervention through subsidy mechanisms and compensation schemes continues to influence corporate profitability. For Indian Oil, the LPG support underscored the financial strain of maintaining affordable fuel prices for India's vast consumer base while navigating volatile international commodity markets.
