Indian-origin founders build $560bn empire globally, outpace domestic startups
A new index reveals Indian entrepreneurs are creating nearly twice as many unicorn companies abroad as at home, highlighting a significant brain drain in the startup ecosystem. The data underscores India's role as a talent exporter in the global venture capital landscape.

Indian-origin founders have established 205 unicorn companies worth a combined $560 billion outside India, far exceeding the 102 unicorns created within the country, according to a fresh analysis by Prosus and Dealroom.
The disparity reveals a striking pattern in India's startup ecosystem: while the nation has emerged as a significant source of entrepreneurial talent, a substantial portion of its most successful founders are building billion-dollar enterprises in foreign markets, particularly in the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
The index mapping Indian founder trajectories demonstrates how talent trained and nurtured in India frequently relocates to pursue venture opportunities abroad. These overseas-based Indian entrepreneurs have collectively created more than double the unicorn wealth compared to their counterparts launching businesses domestically, suggesting significant opportunities may exist to retain top talent within India's own borders.
The findings come as India's domestic startup ecosystem continues to mature, with the country itself hosting over 100 unicorn companies. However, the scale of wealth creation by Indian founders internationally underscores the competitive advantage India possesses in producing entrepreneurial talent, even as it grapples with retaining that talent at home.
Experts point to factors including access to capital, regulatory environment, and market size as potential drivers pushing Indian founders toward overseas expansion, while highlighting the need for policy measures to keep emerging entrepreneurs invested in building India's future.
