A serving Metropolitan Police officer with Indian heritage has been formally charged with attempted rape and sexual assault, the force confirmed. The officer, who has not been named, was arrested following allegations relating to incidents in the London area.
The Metropolitan Police said the officer has been suspended from duty with immediate effect. The force is conducting a parallel misconduct investigation into the circumstances, according to a statement issued to media outlets.
The charges represent a significant development in an ongoing inquiry that has drawn scrutiny to the handling of allegations against serving officers. The Metropolitan Police said it is cooperating fully with prosecutors and has referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as per standard protocol.
The officer is scheduled to appear before magistrates to face the charges. The force emphasised that allegations against members of the service are taken seriously and that it maintains strict standards of conduct expected of all personnel.
