Indian Railways has issued fresh directives to curb noise pollution aboard trains, announcing strict penalties for passengers who disturb fellow travellers through loud music and speakerphone usage. The national transporter is warning commuters that violations could result in fines reaching Rs 5,000 and other legal consequences, including jail time in persistent cases.
The latest enforcement initiative comes as part of a broader awareness campaign to improve passenger comfort and maintain decorum within trains. Railway officials have been instructed to intervene when passengers engage in disruptive behaviour, with authorised personnel empowered to issue warnings and initiate action against offenders.
Passengers who ignore initial warnings from railway staff face escalation of the matter to legal action, underscoring the severity with which the authorities view ongoing disturbances. The railways' decision reflects growing complaints from commuters about noise-related nuisances during their journeys, particularly in long-distance and suburban services.
Railway authorities have emphasised that the regulations apply uniformly across all train categories and passenger classes. The initiative aligns with broader efforts by Indian Railways to enhance the travel experience and enforce passenger conduct standards that respect the rights and comfort of all travellers.
