Indian Railways has extended its passenger accident insurance coverage to travellers who book tickets through traditional offline methods and railway counters, marking a significant policy shift aimed at ensuring uniform protection across all booking channels.
Beginning October 27, passengers purchasing tickets at railway ticket counters or through offline booking mechanisms will receive the same insurance benefits previously available only to online ticket purchasers. The insurance cover provides protection up to 10 lakh rupees, with premiums as low as 45 paise per ticket.
The decision addresses a long-standing disparity in the national transporter's insurance scheme, which had favoured digital ticket buyers. By bringing offline and counter-based ticket purchasers into the ambit of the insurance programme, Indian Railways aims to promote inclusivity and ensure comprehensive risk protection for all passengers regardless of their preferred booking method.
The insurance scheme covers accidental death and disability during rail travel, providing financial security to passengers and their families. The standardisation of coverage terms across booking channels is expected to enhance passenger confidence and align with the railways' broader safety and consumer protection objectives.
