Indian Railways freight volumes surge 5.4% as cargo expansion accelerates

Indian Railways transported 137.9 million tonnes of freight during August, reflecting sustained momentum in the national transporter's cargo operations. The month-on-month expansion of 5.4% underscores the sector's recovery and growing utilization of rail infrastructure for logistics across the country.

Freight revenue generation proved even more buoyant, climbing 6.27% year-on-year during the period. The outperformance of revenue growth relative to volume gains suggests improved pricing and freight mix optimization across Indian Railways' cargo portfolio.

The expansion has been reinforced by ongoing infrastructure development under the Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal initiative. In August alone, five new terminals were commissioned, bringing the total network to 149 facilities. These strategically located terminals aim to enhance last-mile connectivity and reduce logistics costs for shippers across the subcontinent.

The freight sector remains a critical revenue driver for Indian Railways, which has prioritized cargo modernization and terminal development as part of its broader operational efficiency agenda. Continued investment in dedicated cargo infrastructure is expected to further strengthen railways' competitive position in India's logistics market.
