Indian Railways is set to introduce a comprehensive doorstep parcel collection and delivery service in eight major cities, marking a significant shift in how the national transporter handles cargo services. The move aims to provide greater convenience to customers who have previously been required to visit railway parcel offices to send or receive packages.
Under the new scheme, customers will be able to book both pickup and delivery services from their homes using a dedicated Rail Parcel application. The digital-first approach represents Railways' effort to modernize its logistics operations and compete with private courier services that have dominated India's parcel delivery market.
The doorstep service will streamline the parcel dispatch process, with Railway personnel collecting packages directly from customers' residences and ensuring delivery at the recipient's address. This addresses a long-standing inconvenience for parcel users who had to coordinate with Railway stations during business hours.
The service rollout across eight major metropolitan areas signals Railways' intention to test the model before potential expansion to other cities. The initiative reflects broader efforts by Indian Railways to diversify revenue streams beyond passenger transportation and enhance its logistics capabilities in an increasingly competitive market.
