Indian Railways shelves plan to extend Kollam-Kottayam MEMU service to Ernakulam

Indian Railways has decided to freeze plans for extending the Kollam-Kottayam MEMU service further to Ernakulam, responding to objections from commuter and passenger associations in Kerala. The decision comes after stakeholders raised concerns that route expansion would compromise service reliability on the existing corridor.

Regular commuters and passenger welfare groups had opposed the proposed extension, arguing that adding Ernakulam to the service would necessitate schedule modifications that would negatively impact current passengers. The groups emphasised that maintaining punctuality and frequency on the existing Kollam-Kottayam section should take priority over expansion plans.

The MEMU service, which provides affordable suburban connectivity between Kollam and Kottayam, has become a lifeline for daily commuters in the region. Railway authorities appear to have heeded local concerns about operational feasibility, with the extension now shelved pending further review.

The decision reflects growing attention by Indian Railways to commuter feedback in route planning decisions, particularly in Kerala where suburban rail services handle significant daily passenger volumes. Officials have not indicated whether the proposal might be reconsidered after operational improvements to the existing line.
