Indian Railways to penalise passengers for loud calls and speaker audio
Southern Railway has invoked amended legislation to crack down on noise disturbances, with penalties including fines and imprisonment for passengers who make loud phone calls or play audio on speakers within train premises.

Indian Railways is set to enforce stricter penalties against passengers who engage in disruptive behaviour such as making loud telephone calls or playing audio through speakers on trains. The Southern Railway has cited Section 145(2) of the Railways Act, as modified through the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, to implement these measures across its network.
The regulatory framework targets a persistent grievance among commuters regarding noise pollution within train compartments. The amended legislation empowers railway authorities to take action against passengers who compromise the comfort and tranquility of fellow travellers through audible disturbances.
Under the provisions invoked, offending passengers face potential consequences including monetary fines and imprisonment, underscoring the severity with which Indian Railways is addressing the matter. Railway officials have signalled that enforcement will be carried out systematically to ensure compliance.
The move reflects broader efforts by Indian Railways to enhance passenger experience and maintain decorum within coaches. Commuter complaints about disruptive behaviour have grown in recent years as mobile phone usage has become ubiquitous across train services in the country.
Passengers are advised to adhere to etiquette guidelines while travelling by rail, including maintaining low volumes during phone conversations and refraining from audio playback through speakers without headphones.
