Indian SMEs boost cybersecurity budgets amid rising threat landscape
Small and medium enterprises across India are increasing investment in cybersecurity defences as cyber incidents proliferate, though critical vulnerabilities persist in monitoring capabilities and workforce awareness.

Indian small and medium-sized enterprises are ramping up spending on cybersecurity measures in response to mounting cyber threats, according to recent industry analysis. The shift reflects growing recognition among business owners that adequate security infrastructure has become essential to operations, with many firms committing additional resources to protect critical data and systems.
However, increased budgetary allocation alone appears insufficient to address the sector's security challenges. Most SMEs continue to struggle with inadequate monitoring systems that leave blind spots in their defence infrastructure, creating windows of vulnerability that threat actors can exploit. The technical capacity to detect and respond to incidents remains limited across much of the sector.
Human capital gaps further compound the problem. Many SMEs lack in-house cybersecurity expertise, forcing reliance on external consultants or off-the-shelf solutions that may not address their specific operational contexts. Employee awareness training remains sparse, with frontline staff often unprepared to recognize phishing attempts, social engineering tactics, and other common attack vectors.
Security experts note that sustained investment in workforce development and comprehensive security audits would complement increased spending and significantly strengthen SME resilience. Until these foundational elements are addressed, expanded budgets risk delivering only marginal improvements to overall security posture.
