Indian startup pioneers DNA-based digital data storage technology

A nascent Indian startup is working to revolutionize data storage by harnessing the molecular structure of DNA to preserve digital information. BioCompute, founded by entrepreneur Angha Rajesh, 24, has developed technology capable of encoding photographs, videos, and other digital data directly into DNA sequences.

The approach offers a potential solution to data preservation challenges faced by individuals and organizations worldwide. DNA-based storage systems can theoretically maintain information integrity for thousands of years while requiring minimal physical space compared to conventional storage media. A single gram of DNA can theoretically store the equivalent of millions of gigabytes of data.

The startup has gained sufficient traction in India to warrant international expansion. BioCompute is now establishing a presence in San Francisco, positioning itself within the United States biotechnology and technology hub. The move signals growing investor confidence in the emerging field of molecular data storage.

DNA storage technology remains largely in development phases globally, with research institutions and private companies exploring practical applications and cost-reduction strategies. If successfully commercialized, the technology could address long-term archival needs for governments, corporations, and research institutions seeking reliable, space-efficient data preservation methods.
