Indian women boxers set sights on elusive Asian Games gold in 2026
Buoyed by a record-breaking performance at the Commonwealth Games, India's women boxing contingent aims to clinch an Asian Games gold medal for the first time since Mary Kom's 2014 triumph. The squad will face formidable competition from Kazakhstan, China and Uzbekistan at the continental event.

India's women boxers are targeting their maiden Asian Games gold medal as head coach Santiago Nieva looks to build on the team's exceptional showing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games last month, where they secured five gold medals and a silver among their record haul of 10 medals overall.
"We want to have boxers in the final and we want to be on top of the podium, that's our goal. We also know that the Asian Games is a very strong competition, with Asian countries improving significantly," Nieva said during an interaction facilitated by the Sports Authority of India.
Mary Kom remains the sole Indian woman boxer to have captured an Asian Games gold, winning the 51kg title in 2014. The target assumes greater significance given the strong representation of powerhouse nations at the continental championships.
India's boxing prowess at major international tournaments has been evident across disciplines. The men's boxing programme achieved a notable milestone at the 2018 Asian Games when Amit Panghal secured gold in the 49kg category, underscoring the potential within the Indian contingent to perform at the highest level of Asian competition.
