Indian worker rescued from Senegal after four-month ordeal returns home

Umashankar Kumar returned to his native Muzaffarpur on Monday after enduring a prolonged ordeal in Senegal, where he had travelled for employment. The worker alleged that his employer in Dakar confiscated his passport and visa documents upon arrival, while subjecting him to 12-hour work shifts under exploitative conditions.

As his financial resources depleted and he struggled to secure adequate food, Kumar appealed for assistance from Indian authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Senegal intervened in the matter, taking up his case and working towards a resolution.

Following diplomatic efforts, Kumar was able to recover his passport and arrange his return to India. His repatriation marks another instance of Indian workers facing difficulties abroad despite employment arrangements, highlighting ongoing concerns about labour exploitation in international job placements.

The successful intervention by Indian diplomatic missions underscores the government's commitment to assisting distressed nationals abroad. Kumar's case joins a growing list of Indian migrant workers who have required assistance from embassies to escape exploitative employment situations.
