Indian zoos urged to adopt Singapore's wildlife reserve model

A state legislature committee has proposed that zoological parks in Tirupati and Visakhapatnam should emulate the operational model of Singapore's Mandai Wildlife Reserve to improve their conservation and management standards.

The panel's recommendation stems from a recognition that the Singapore facility has established best practices in wildlife preservation, habitat management, and visitor engagement that could be adapted to Indian zoo operations. Mandai Wildlife Reserve, which includes multiple animal attractions, has become a model for progressive zoo management in Asia.

The committee believes that implementing similar frameworks could enhance the breeding programs, animal welfare standards, and educational initiatives at the two zoos while also improving their commercial viability and visitor facilities. The suggestion encompasses both operational practices and infrastructure development.

The recommendation underscores growing efforts by Indian institutions to align with international conservation standards and modern zoo management practices. Implementation would require coordination between zoo authorities, state wildlife departments, and potentially international conservation bodies to ensure the successful adaptation of the Singapore model to local conditions and regulatory requirements.
