Indigenous AIP System to Extend Indian Navy Submarine Underwater Endurance

India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched the second phase of its indigenous Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, marking a significant advancement in extending the underwater endurance of the Indian Navy's submarine fleet.

The Setting to Work Phase-2 of the AIP system was inaugurated at the DRDO facility in Hazira, Gujarat. The technology represents a major step forward in indigenous submarine propulsion capabilities, enabling vessels to remain submerged for extended periods without surfacing to recharge batteries or access atmospheric air.

Once integrated, the AIP system will substantially augment the operational range and stealth characteristics of India's Kalvari-class submarines. Navy officials and defence analysts regard the development as crucial for strengthening India's maritime security posture in the Indian Ocean region.

According to current integration schedules, the indigenous AIP system is planned to be fitted onto Kalvari-class submarines by 2027. The phased development approach underscores DRDO's commitment to achieving self-reliance in critical submarine technologies and reducing dependence on foreign systems for next-generation underwater platforms.

The successful commissioning of the AIP system Phase-2 represents progress in India's broader efforts to modernize its naval capabilities through indigenous research and development initiatives.
