IndiGo, Air India intensify competition on key Mumbai-Delhi route

IndiGo maintained a narrow lead on the Mumbai-Delhi route during the April-September period, commanding 42.8 per cent of available seat capacity, marginally ahead of Air India Group's 41.9 per cent share, according to industry data. The two full-service carriers have traditionally dominated the corridor, but their duopoly is facing increasing pressure from newer entrants.

Akasa Air, the budget carrier that began operations in August 2022, has emerged as a significant disruptor on the route. The airline's market share climbed to 10.7 per cent during the same six-month period, driven by an aggressive expansion strategy. Akasa Air's decision to double its flight frequency on the Mumbai-Delhi sector reflects its confidence in the route's demand and signals its intent to capture a larger slice of the highly competitive market.

The escalating capacity additions underscore the intense competition among carriers to capture traffic on India's most profitable domestic route. With business and leisure travelers offering steady demand, airlines continue to view the Mumbai-Delhi corridor as essential to their growth strategies. The entrance of well-funded new players like Akasa Air has intensified price competition and forced established carriers to enhance their service offerings and flight frequencies.

Industry observers note that the competitive dynamics on this route often serve as a barometer for the health of India's aviation sector. As carriers jostle for position, passengers stand to benefit from improved service quality and expanded flight options, though margins for airlines remain under pressure in an increasingly crowded market.
