IndiGo Chief Pushes for Lower Charges at Revamped Mumbai Airport

IndiGo Chief Executive Willie Walsh has urged Mumbai airport authorities to lower per-passenger charges following the redevelopment of Terminal 1, contending that the facility's expanded capacity should enable reduced landing and handling fees across the board.

Walsh's appeal comes as the airline prepares to scale up operations at the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is set to become a major hub for air travel in the western region. The executive argued that terminal improvements typically drive efficiencies that warrant corresponding reductions in aeronautical charges levied on airlines.

The Terminal 1 revamp has significantly boosted Mumbai airport's passenger handling capacity, a development Walsh sees as an opportunity to create a more competitive fare environment. Airlines have long maintained that high airport charges at major metros like Mumbai constrain their ability to offer affordable fares to passengers.

Mumbai airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India in partnership with private concessionaires, has been undergoing substantial infrastructure upgrades to handle growing passenger traffic. The enhanced facilities at Terminal 1 are expected to improve operational efficiency for all carriers operating from the hub.

IndiGo, India's largest airline by market share, continues to expand its presence across domestic and international routes. The carrier's strategic focus on emerging airports like Navi Mumbai reflects industry projections of sustained growth in air travel across India's major metropolitan regions.
