IndiGo co-founder pledges ₹300 crore more for IIT Kanpur medical school
Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of budget carrier IndiGo and an IIT Kanpur alumnus, has committed an additional ₹300 crore towards the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology at the institute. The fresh commitment brings his total contribution to ₹400 crore since the project's inception in 2022.

Gangwal's latest pledge represents a significant boost to IIT Kanpur's ambitious medical education initiative. The IndiGo co-founder previously donated ₹100 crore in 2022 to support the establishment of the medical school on campus. His new commitment includes provisions for matching grants of up to ₹300 crore to encourage contributions from other donors towards the institution's development.
The Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is being positioned as an innovative first-of-its-kind medical institution within India's premier technical education network. The school's infrastructure plans encompass a 500-bed super-speciality hospital to be constructed on the IIT Kanpur campus, alongside a 200-bed cancer care research centre aimed at advancing oncological research and treatment capabilities.
Gangwal's continued investment underscores his commitment to advancing medical education and healthcare infrastructure in India. The initiative represents a rare convergence of technical excellence and medical sciences within the academic ecosystem.
