IndiGo passenger booked for tampering with aircraft emergency exit

A passenger travelling on an IndiGo flight bound for Pune has been booked for allegedly tampering with an emergency exit mechanism aboard the aircraft. The flight completed its journey safely and landed in Pune as scheduled, authorities said.

The incident prompted action from aviation authorities and law enforcement agencies. A case has been registered against the passenger under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code that came into effect in July 2023, as well as the Aircraft Act, which governs civil aviation safety and security.

Tampering with aircraft safety equipment is considered a serious violation and poses a potential risk to all passengers and crew members on board. The Aircraft Act mandates strict penalties for such breaches, and investigations into the incident are underway.

IndiGo, India's largest airline by market share, prioritises passenger and crew safety. The airline typically cooperates with authorities in investigating such matters to ensure compliance with aviation safety standards and protocols.
