Indira Gandhi deeply respected Sardar Patel, says Ramesh

Indira Gandhi deeply respected Sardar Patel, says Ramesh

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Friday pushed back against what he termed attempts to misrepresent the relationship between Indira Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, asserting that the former Prime Minister held profound respect for the freedom fighter and nation-builder.

Ramesh shared a historical photograph from 1947 showing a young Indira Gandhi greeting Patel, in a post marking both Patel's birth anniversary on October 31 and Gandhi's death anniversary on the same date. The image serves as documentary evidence of the two leaders' interaction during India's early post-independence period.

"Distortions of history cannot change the deep reverence Indira Gandhi maintained for Sardar Patel," Ramesh stated, using the term 'distorians' to describe those he believes have mischaracterized historical records. His comments appear aimed at countering narratives that have questioned Gandhi's regard for Patel's contributions to Indian nation-building.

The photograph, rarely seen in public discourse, provides a tangible link between two significant figures in independent India's founding era. Patel, known as the architect of India's integration of princely states, and Gandhi, who would later serve as the country's first female Prime Minister, were contemporary witnesses to the nation's transformation during the critical post-1947 period.

Ramesh's intervention adds to ongoing historical discussions about the legacies of key independence-era and post-independence leaders in India.
