Indonesia Arrests 17 Foreigners, Including Two Singaporeans, in Illegal Lending Probe

The arrests were made following an investigation into financial crimes targeting foreign nationals living in Indonesia and abroad. Bali's law enforcement agencies coordinated the operation, which uncovered systematic lending practices that circumvented Indonesia's regulated financial sector.

Among those detained were the two Singaporean nationals, whose identities have not been disclosed pending further investigation. The remaining 15 detainees comprised citizens of various nations, indicating the network's international scope and reach.

The illegal lending operation specifically focused on expatriates and foreign residents, exploiting gaps in regulatory oversight and language barriers to conduct unregistered financial transactions. Investigators seized documentation and financial records during the raids, which have been forwarded to prosecutors.

Indonesia's financial regulatory authorities have intensified efforts to combat unlicensed lending operations, which pose risks to consumers and undermine the nation's formal banking system. Authorities did not immediately specify the charges facing the detainees, though illegal lending operations typically violate banking and financial services regulations.

The two Singaporean citizens are expected to remain in custody while investigations proceed. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been notified of the detention and is providing consular assistance to its nationals.
