Indonesia eyes India's Astra missile for Su-30MK2 fighter jets
Indonesia is studying the integration of India's Astra Mk1 air-to-air missile onto its Su-30MK2 combat aircraft, following a preliminary agreement reached during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta in July 2026. The move reflects Jakarta's efforts to upgrade its aerial defense capabilities.

Indonesia has initiated a feasibility study to integrate India's indigenously developed Astra Mk1 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile onto its fleet of Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighter jets, according to defense sources familiar with the development. The decision follows in-principle approval during Modi's diplomatic visit to the Indonesian capital last July, marking a significant step in military cooperation between the two nations.
The Astra Mk1 missile, developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), offers a combat range of approximately 110 kilometers, representing a substantial upgrade over Indonesia's existing air-to-air missile systems. The enhanced range would provide Jakarta's air force with improved air defense capabilities across its sprawling archipelago.
However, integrating the missile onto the Russian-origin Su-30MK2 platform presents technical challenges, primarily concerning radar compatibility and fire-control system integration. Defense analysts note that successfully marrying the Indian missile system with the aircraft's avionics suite will require extensive testing and refinement to ensure optimal operational performance.
The potential acquisition aligns with Indonesia's broader defense modernization strategy and reflects growing defense ties between New Delhi and Jakarta. Both nations have emphasized strengthening bilateral security cooperation, with the Astra integration marking another milestone in their expanding military relationship amid regional maritime security concerns.
