Indonesia launches programme to build entrepreneurship among poor families
Indonesia's Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has unveiled a new capacity-building initiative aimed at helping disadvantaged households establish sustainable businesses through training and mentoring support.

The Indonesian government has rolled out LAKSMI, a comprehensive microenterprise development programme designed to strengthen economic self-reliance among low-income families. The initiative was launched in Surabaya, East Java, on September 23 by Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Maman Abdurrahman.
Under the programme, beneficiaries of government socioeconomic assistance schemes will receive structured training and ongoing business mentoring to help them establish viable microenterprises. The ministry aims to equip participants with practical skills and knowledge needed to launch and manage sustainable small businesses.
The programme addresses a critical need in Indonesia's economy, where microenterprises play a vital role in employment generation and poverty reduction. By combining financial support with capacity-building interventions, LAKSMI seeks to move vulnerable households beyond subsistence-level income towards genuine economic independence.
The initiative reflects Indonesia's broader commitment to inclusive economic development, leveraging existing social protection systems to create pathways for beneficiaries to transition from aid recipients to productive entrepreneurs. Officials indicated that the training and mentoring components would be tailored to local market conditions and opportunities across implementation regions.
