Indonesia's top court dismisses challenge to VP Gibran's educational qualifications

The Constitutional Court in Jakarta ruled on Tuesday that the petitioners did not have the legal authority to bring the case before the bench, effectively dismissing their challenge without examining the substantive claims regarding the vice president's educational background.

The petition had questioned whether Gibran, who is also the son of President Joko Widodo, met the constitutional requirements for the position of vice president. Educational qualifications are among the eligibility criteria specified in Indonesia's constitution for high office.

Following the court's rejection, the petitioners indicated they would escalate their efforts by taking their case to the national parliament, which has alternative mechanisms for addressing eligibility disputes among senior government officials.

Gibran, 36, was elected as vice president alongside President Prabowo Subianto in October 2024, making him the youngest vice president in Indonesia's history. The legal challenge represents one of several attempts by political opponents to contest aspects of his candidacy and eligibility.

The Constitutional Court's decision marks a procedural setback for critics seeking to challenge the vice president's qualifications through the judiciary, though parliamentary avenues remain available for further action.
