Indonesia shuts eight airports as Anak Krakatau volcanic ash spreads
Indonesia has closed eight airports due to ash from the Anak Krakatau volcano disrupting flight operations across the region. Five alternative airports have been activated for round-the-clock services to accommodate affected passengers.

Indonesia's aviation authorities have suspended operations at eight airports following significant ash emissions from Mount Anak Krakatau, which has disrupted commercial flight schedules across the archipelago. The volcanic activity has created hazardous conditions for aircraft operations, prompting authorities to implement precautionary closures to ensure passenger safety.
To mitigate disruptions to travellers and cargo operations, Indonesian authorities have activated five alternative airports for 24-hour operations. These include Kertajati, Semarang, Juanda, Yogyakarta and Solo, which are now handling diverted flights and providing continuity for air services in the region. The move aims to minimise passenger inconvenience while volcanic conditions persist.
The Anak Krakatau volcano, located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, remains under close monitoring by Indonesia's geological agency. Authorities have advised airlines and passengers to check with their carriers for updated flight information, as ash dispersal patterns may change depending on weather conditions and volcanic activity levels.
Indonesia's transport ministry has coordinated with airports and airlines to ensure smooth operations during the volcanic disruption. Passengers affected by flight cancellations or delays are advised to contact their airlines directly for rebooking options and further assistance.
