Indonesia and Thailand are ramping up coordinated efforts to track down and recover funds stolen through online financial scams. The region's growing crackdown reflects mounting alarm over transnational fraud networks targeting citizens across Southeast Asia.

Indonesia's Anti-Scam Centre has emerged as a focal point in the regional battle against cybercrime, logging approximately 702,000 fraud reports by the end of September. The agency has identified more than 1.37 million suspect accounts linked to scam operations and successfully frozen around 703,000 accounts, signalling intensified enforcement action.
Thailand has similarly strengthened its response to financial fraud, joining Indonesia in a coordinated push to dismantle scam networks and recover stolen assets. The bilateral effort underscores recognition among Southeast Asian governments that online financial crimes require cross-border cooperation to be effectively countered.
The escalating action in Indonesia and Thailand mirrors broader regional mobilization. Cambodia has launched a dedicated crackdown targeting online scam operations, while Vietnam has established inter-agency task forces specifically designed to combat transnational fraud networks. Laos has also enhanced cooperation frameworks with neighbouring countries to address the issue.
Experts attribute the region's heightened vigilance to the scale of the problem. Scam proceeds often flow across multiple jurisdictions, complicating recovery efforts and necessitating improved information-sharing and coordinated enforcement between national authorities. The freeze of over 700,000 accounts in Indonesia alone suggests the scope of suspicious financial activity requiring investigation and remedial action.
