Indonesian civil groups slam government absence at forest fire lawsuit hearing

Environmental groups and civil society organisations in Indonesia have expressed disappointment after the government did not attend a class-action hearing regarding widespread forest and land fires, according to court proceedings held this week.

The legal case centres on allegations that Indonesian authorities have been negligent in their duties to prevent forest and land fires that occur with regularity each year, as well as their response efforts to combat active blazes. The plaintiffs argue that inadequate governmental action has allowed burning to persist across the archipelago, contributing to environmental degradation and affecting public health across the region.

The absence of government representatives at the hearing has drawn sharp rebuke from participating civil society groups, who view the no-show as indicative of official indifference to the environmental crisis. Environmental advocates have long pushed Indonesian authorities to strengthen fire prevention mechanisms and enforcement of regulations against illegal land clearing.

Forest and land fires have become an annual concern in Indonesia, with smoke haze regularly affecting not only the nation but neighbouring countries including Malaysia and Singapore. Previous years have seen particularly severe burning seasons that disrupted air quality and economic activity across Southeast Asia.

The case represents one of several legal efforts by civil groups to hold the government accountable for environmental management. Court proceedings are expected to continue as the case develops.
