Indonesian Court Reduces Gojek Founder's Prison Sentence to Nine Years

An Indonesian court has cut the prison sentence for Gojek co-founder Nadiem Makarim to nine years, reducing the original 10-year term handed down in June. Makarim was convicted of abusing his authority in connection with the procurement of Google Chromebooks for Indonesian schools during his tenure as education minister.

The appellate court's decision came after reviewing the case following Makarim's initial conviction. The reduction of one year represents a partial success for the defence, though Makarim remains convicted on the abuse of authority charge related to the technology purchasing process.

Makarim, who founded ride-hailing platform Gojek before transitioning to public service, served as Indonesia's education minister from 2019 to 2023. The Chromebook procurement case has drawn scrutiny regarding government contracting procedures and ministerial oversight during his tenure in the education portfolio.

The case marks a significant development in Indonesia's ongoing efforts to address corruption and misconduct among high-ranking government officials. Makarim has maintained his position throughout the legal proceedings.
