Indonesian fire haze expected to drift toward western Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said harmful haze originating from fires burning in Kalimantan, Indonesia, could drift toward western Philippine areas in the coming days. According to PAGASA weather specialists, the movement of the haze is linked to the strengthening southwest monsoon, locally known as the habagat, which is expected to bring strong winds across the region.

The agency issued the advisory to alert residents in western provinces about potential air quality degradation. Smoke and haze from transboundary fires have periodically affected the Philippines during peak dry seasons, particularly areas closest to Indonesian territories.

PAGASA recommends that residents in affected areas monitor air quality updates and take necessary precautions, especially those with respiratory conditions. The public is advised to limit outdoor activities if haze conditions worsen and to use appropriate protective equipment when necessary.
