Infantino confirms re-election bid despite World Cup controversy

FIFA confirmed on Sunday that President Gianni Infantino will contest the 2027 presidential election for a final term extending through 2031, brushing aside calls for his resignation from prominent football authorities.

Infantino's decision to pursue re-election follows significant backlash over his controversial proposal to sell stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private investors. The scheme, announced in April, triggered strong opposition from European and national football associations concerned about the tournament's governance and commercial integrity.

UEFA, European football's governing body, has been particularly vocal in its criticism, stating it has lost confidence in Infantino's leadership and previously threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. Several national associations, including England's FA, have also withdrawn support for the FIFA president.

November 18 marks the deadline for candidates to formally declare their intention to stand in the presidential contest, with voting scheduled four months later. Despite the mounting opposition, FIFA indicated through a spokesperson that Infantino remains committed to his re-election campaign, stating that his April announcement of candidacy stands unchanged.
