Inflation Erodes SIP Gains: Calculating Your True Investment Worth

While your systematic investment plan statement may display Rs 50 lakh, inflation significantly diminishes its actual purchasing power. Financial experts advise investors to look beyond nominal figures when assessing real wealth accumulation.

Investors tracking their systematic investment plan (SIP) contributions often focus on the total corpus shown in account statements, but financial analysts warn that nominal values can be misleading. Inflation steadily erodes the purchasing power of accumulated wealth, meaning Rs 50 lakh today will not retain its equivalent value in future years.

To calculate true wealth, investors must adjust their portfolio value for inflation using the real rate of return. The real return is derived by subtracting the inflation rate from the nominal return on investment. If an SIP generates 12 percent annual returns in a year when inflation stands at 6 percent, the actual purchasing power gain is only 6 percent.

Experts recommend investors conduct periodic assessments of their real wealth by accounting for inflation when planning major expenses such as education, healthcare, or retirement. This approach provides a more accurate picture of financial security than nominal figures alone. Using inflation-adjusted calculations helps investors determine whether their investment strategy will genuinely meet future financial goals.

Investors should also consider that inflation rates vary across different expense categories. Housing, healthcare, and education costs typically inflate faster than the general inflation rate, necessitating higher real returns to maintain purchasing power in these critical areas. Regular portfolio reviews incorporating inflation adjustments enable more informed retirement and expense planning decisions.
