Inflation Functions as Hidden Tax on Citizens: RBI Governor

The Reserve Bank of India's governor drew parallels between unchecked inflation and an invisible tax burden on citizens during remarks at the NDTV World Summit, emphasizing how rising prices erode household purchasing power across all income segments.

The comments underscored the central bank's commitment to its inflation-control framework, which mandates maintaining consumer price inflation at a target of 4 per cent. The RBI is permitted a tolerance band of 2 per cent on either side of this target, allowing flexibility between 2 and 6 per cent.

The governor's characterization of inflation as a de facto tax reflects growing concern about price pressures affecting Indians' living standards and consumption patterns. This framing highlights why price stability remains a cornerstone of monetary policy, alongside supporting economic growth.

The RBI's dual mandate balances inflation control with supporting employment and growth objectives. Maintaining inflation within the prescribed band requires careful calibration of interest rates and other policy tools to prevent both deflationary and inflationary spirals that could destabilize the economy.
