Influencer's Doxycycline Plague Prevention Claim Lacks Medical Evidence

An online influencer has drawn criticism for promoting doxycycline as a preventive measure against pneumonic plague, a claim that lacks any established medical basis. The influencer stated he takes the antibiotic as part of a personal health regimen, attributing plague-prevention properties to the drug.

Medical professionals have dismissed the assertion as medically unfounded. Doxycycline, when used as post-exposure prophylaxis, or DoxyPEP, is established only for reducing the risk of certain sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia and syphilis, following sexual contact. There is no scientific evidence supporting its use against plague pathogens.

The controversy comes as the influencer faces legal charges related to allegations of sexual assault and drug administration without consent. Health authorities have not issued any warnings about plague outbreaks in regions where such concerns might warrant public health intervention.

Medical misinformation spread through social media platforms has become an increasing concern across South Asia, with health experts urging the public to rely on verified medical guidance from qualified healthcare providers rather than unsubstantiated claims from online personalities.
