As of mid-September, health officials have documented 10,244 confirmed influenza cases with 109 deaths attributed to the viral infection, while leptospirosis has claimed approximately 100 confirmed lives with an additional 78 probable deaths under investigation.
The dual outbreak underscores the vulnerability of the state during monsoon and post-monsoon periods, when waterborne diseases like leptospirosis typically proliferate alongside respiratory illnesses including influenza. Leptospirosis, transmitted through contact with contaminated water and soil from infected animal urine, poses particular risks during heavy rainfall when flooding spreads pathogens across communities.
