Initiative transforms discarded Ganesha idols into school furniture

A creative sustainability initiative is turning religious festival waste into educational resources by converting discarded Ganesha idols into study tables and learning furniture for schools. Spearheaded by innovators Malhar Kaalambe and Dr. Binish Desai, the 'Visarjan Se Vidya Tak' project addresses two pressing concerns: the environmental impact of post-festival idol disposal and the shortage of quality educational infrastructure in many institutions.

Since its inception, the project has successfully processed 3,000 kg of Plaster of Paris—the primary material used in traditional Ganesha idols—into 760 functional study tables. Each table represents both waste prevention and direct support for classroom learning environments, demonstrating how cultural practices can be aligned with environmental and educational goals.

The initiative is scaling up its operations with ambitious targets. By 2026, the project aims to produce 5,000 study tables along with additional educational furniture and learning resources. This expansion reflects growing recognition of the need for innovative solutions that simultaneously address sustainability challenges and educational infrastructure gaps in schools across the country.

The project highlights how post-visarjan (idol immersion) waste, typically a disposal challenge during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival season, can be creatively repurposed to benefit educational institutions. By converting ritual observance byproducts into classroom essentials, the initiative demonstrates a practical model for integrating environmental consciousness with community welfare.
