MANILA — The Philippine Daily Inquirer's two-part investigative series on the country's mounting debt has earned the Best News Coverage award at the 48th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA), the country's premier Catholic media recognition program.
The award-winning report, produced by reporters Krixia Subingsubing, Nyah de Leon and Dexter Cabalza, examined the historical origins and legal foundations of the Philippines' debt accumulation. The investigation also analyzed how the growing debt obligations have constrained government spending and limited funding available for essential public services.
The Catholic Mass Media Awards, presented annually, recognize excellence in journalism and media work that uphold Catholic values and serve the public interest. The Inquirer's comprehensive debt analysis stood out among entries for its investigative depth and public service contribution.
The award highlights continued media attention to fiscal policy issues affecting millions of Filipinos. Debt management remains a critical policy concern as government agencies balance development spending with debt service obligations.
